Leonardo DiCaprio, who's already receiving positive buzz for his work in Martin
Scorsese's The Aviator, has signed to produce and star in an untitled
drama, which will be produced by Beacon Pictures and DiCaprio's Appian Way.
Beacon and the Initial Entertainment Group will provide the financing.
The script, which will be penned by Scott Burns, focuses on the new global
phenomenon of governments and companies turning to mercenaries to wage war.
Peter Landesman, a senior reporter and foreign correspondent for the New
York Times Magazine, conceived the idea with Appian Way president Brad Simpson.
Landesman currently has a deal with Beacon and Appian Way with IEG, so the
companies combined to finance the project. Armyan Bernstein of Beacon and Graham
King of IEG finalized the deal.
In addition to Aviator, which will hit theaters on December 17, DiCaprio
is attached to star in the CIA thriller The Good Shepherd for director
Robert De Niro. His more recent credits include Catch Me If You Can,
Gangs of New York and The Beach.
Burns recently penned The Informant, about a corporate whistle blower,
which Steven Soderbergh will direct with Matt Damon attached to star. He will
also write and direct PU-239 about black market plutonium.
