Sideways scoops another honor
Yet another critics group has shown favor for Alexander Payne's Sideways. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) named the Fox Searchlight comedy the Best Picture of the Year with Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby taking the runner up spot. Henry Sheehan, president of the LAFCA, made the announcement Saturday night.

In addition to Best Picture, Sideways earned Payne directing honors and the award for Best Screenplay, which he shared with co-writer Jim Taylor. The film's Thomas Haden Church was recognized as the Best Supporting Actor, and the film's Virginia Madsen was named the Best Supporting Actress. Paul Giamatti was the runner up on the Best Actor side.

On the helming front, The Aviator's Martin Scorsese landed just behind Payne, while Charlie Kaufman also was a runner up to Payne for his screenplay to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Vera Drake's Imelda Stuanton took the award for playing the title role in the Mike Leigh abortion drama, and Julie Delpy from Before Sunset was named the runner up. Liam Neeson also was honored for a title role, Professor Alfred Kinsey in Fox Searchlight's Kinsey. Morgan Freeman of Million Dollar Baby finished as runner up to Church in the supporting actor category, and Cate Blanchett came in behind Madsen for her work in The Aviator and Coffee & Cigarettes.

The critcially acclaimed House of Flying Daggers from Chinese helmer Zhang Yimou won the foreign language prize followed by Walter Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries. Born into Brothels, from Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman, landed just ahead of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 in the documentary category. This year's animated favorite was once again the Disney/Pixar collaboration The Incredibles.

The special New Generation award was given to Maria Full of Grace's writer-director Joshua Marston and the film's star, Catalina Sandino Moreno.

The LAFCA's 30th annual achievement awards ceremony will be held on January 13 at the St. Regis Hotel in Los Angeles.
