Kiwi director Peter Jackson is suing New Line Cinema, claiming the studio shortchanged
him on profits from part one of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jackson's
production company, Wingnut Films, filed a federal lawsuit in Los Angeles on
Monday.
Jackson's company accuses New Line and subsidiary Katja Motion Pictures of failure to properly calculate revenue from DVD sales from the 2001 feature The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The suit does not state a specific amount sought in damages, but it does mention that the film grossed more than $314 million in box office receipts in the United States and more than $556 million overseas, in addition to revenue from video and merchandise sales.
The suit also claims New Line gives WB affiliates favorable licensing deals
and seeks a court injunction against New Line from reaching deals related to
the film with affiliates "without first seeking the most competitive and beneficial
deals from unaffiliated third parties in a free and open market." New Line is
expected to promptly answer to the claims.
