Andy Serkis, probably best known as Gollum from New Line Cinema's Lord of
the Rings series, and Stephen Fry, who provided the narration for Buena
Vista Pictures' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, have been cast
in Stormbreaker for helmer Geoffrey Sax. The project is currently shooting
on the Isle of Man with a budget of $40 million.
Adapted from Anthony Horowitz's bestselling teen spy series surrounding central
character Alex Rider, Stormbreaker will star Serkis as Mr. Grin, one
of Darrius Sayle's (Mickey Rourke) evil henchman. Fry will play Smithers, a
scientific expert who creates gadgets for the MI6 and who works undercover as
an assistant at a toy shop. The cast also includes Sarah Bolger, Damian Lewis,
Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy, Sophie Okonedo, Missi Pyle, Alicia Silverstone and
Ashley Walters.
Horowitz adapted his own material for the screen. Marc and Peter Samuelson,
Steve Christian and Andreas Grosch will serve as producers on the film. Hilary
Dugdale, Nigel Green, Andreas Schmid and Horowitz are the executive producers.
The Weinstein Co., the new venture from Bob and Harvey Weinstein, picked up
North American distribution rights on the project, while Capitol Films will
be handling overseas sales. Entertainment Film Distributors have already acquired
the rights in the U.K.
