Burton to produce a feature version of 9

Tim Burton has taken a big interest in a young new animator: Shane Acker. Acker's
sci-fi short 9 just won the best animated film at the annual Comic-Con
in San Diego, won a student film Academy Award and it's eligible for an Oscar
next spring.
But that's not the big news. Daily Variety reports Burton will produce a feature length version of 9 in conjunction with Universal Pictures' specialty banner Focus Features. The film's setting is a parallel world where mankind is under threat.
The visuals are computer generated with a stylized quality that suggests stop motion animation. Burton calls the short "among the most extraordinary 10 minutes of film we've ever seen" and calls the style "hauntingly beautiful."
It's easy to see why the filmmaker is interested: Burton made his own way into the big time with his stop-motion animated student film Frankenweenie. No release date has been announced for 9.
