Another battle is about to shake the fractious Screen Actors Guild: a battle
for leadership. Two-term President Melissa Gilbert has decided against running
for a third term, setting up a race of new candidates for the guild's top office.
By the deadline Thursday, three candidates had qualified to campaign for Gilbert's place: Alan Rosenberg, a member of the confrontational "Membership First" faction of the Guild; Robert Conrad, who has never held office in SAG before; and Morgan Fairchild, who is considered an ally of Gilbert, but who declines to align herself with either "Membership First" or the "Restore Respect" faction.
Gilbert, whose "Restore Respect" faction favored a more pragmatic and businesslike approach to negotiations with producers, says she believes the schism in the guild, at this point, "may well be irreparable." SAG members will vote in September, for their new leadership.
Gilbert told the SAG membership in a statement that she found her two terms as President "remarkable, at times frustrating, but incredibly rewarding." And she added that she leaves the SAG President's office "with no regrets."
