Universal Pictures has recruited two A-list Hollywood writers, Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman and Scott Frank, to do rewrites on two high-profile projects to be directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard. The two projects, Downtown and Cinderella Man, are eyeing Oscar winners, Tom Hanks and Russell Crowe, repsectively, as their stars.

The first film, Downtown, will be rewritten by Frank based on an original script by Alan Ball. Hanks and his partner Gary Goetzman, through their Playtone production shingle, enlisted Ball to pen the Downtown script after he took home the screenplay Oscar for American Beauty.

The story centers on a gay cop in 1960's Cleveland who is investigating the murder of his lover. Hanks would play the detective in the film, which would reunite Hanks and Howard who worked together on Apollo 13.

The second project, Cinderella, centers on Depression-era boxing champ and folk hero Jim Braddock, who is expected to be played by Crowe. That film will be a co-production between Universal and Miramax Films. The project reteams Goldsman and Howard, both of whom took home respective Oscars this year for their work writing and directing A Beautiful Mind.

In addition to Mind, Goldsman's credits include A Time to Kill, Lost in Space and Practical Magic, while Frank has penned the scripts to such features as Little Man Tate, Out of Sight and Minority Report.
