Going, going, gone. DreamWorks Pictures has won the bidding war for the latest
project from hot property Will Ferrell. DreamWorks has picked up Action News,
a starring vehicle for the Old School star to be directed by Adam McKay,
who will be making his helming debut on the project. Lensing on the project
is currently scheduled to begin in July, with Ferrell receiving a $4 million
paycheck to topline.
The script was written by Ferrell and McKay, who worked together on NBC's Saturday
Night Live, Ferrell as an actor and McKay as head writer. News stars
Ferrell as a pompous newcaster in Portland, OR, who gets matched up with a young
female journalist who actually has quality reporting skills. The anchorman soon
comes to realize that his manicured looks and TelePrompter-reading abilities
may not be enough to keep him alive at the small news station.
Judd Apatow will be producing the project, and David O. Russell and Shauna
Weinberg will take the executive producing reigns. Ferrell and McKay launched
the idea at DreamWorks, but it then moved to New Regency and then on to New
Line. After the release of Old School, the property became hot once again
and was snatched up for DreamWorks by Michael De Luca and Adam Goodman.
Repped by the United Talent Agency, Ferrell has helped Old School rack
up over $50 million at the box office to date. Other big screen Ferrell projects
have included Zoolander, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Austin
Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, among others.
McKay is repped by Endeavor and Mosaic Media Group.
