Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger is creating more than clothing and accessories.
He formed a film division called THEntertainment, with the object of producing
a movie called Proud, the true story of a WWII warship manned by African-American
sailors.
The film revolves around the men of the USS Mason, the only crew of African-American
sailors to take a ship into combat, fighting both Nazi submarines in foreign
waters and racism at home. It will be told through the eyes of a veteran who
passes on the story to his grandson. Ossie Davis will play the vet.
Davis, Stephen Rea, Darnell Williams, Denise Nicholas and Vernel Bagneris came
on board to star. The designer's daughter, Ally Hilfiger, is producing, and
Mary Pat Kelly wrote and will direct. Kelly wrote a book and made a documentary
on the subject.
Most of the film has already been shot in Buffalo and on board the USS The
Sullivans in Elmira, NY, as well as Derry, Northern Ireland, where the Mason's
first port visit was re-created.
