The Scriptwriters Network, a non-profit organization committed to providing
educational and professional opportunities for its film and television writing
members, has announced the winners of its 13th annual Carl Sautter Memorial
Screenwriting Competition for Film and Television. The finalists and winners
were announced at a ceremony held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, the site
of the first Academy Awards ceremony.
Network chairman Bill Lundy, who recently penned the Sci Fi Channel's Silent
Warnings and the upcoming Alien Blood, opened the ceremony thanking
the Network for the opportunites being a member has afforded him. He then introduced
Marc Zicree, a motivational speaker who coaches screenwriters in developing
their screenplays and the night's guest speaker. Zicree, a writer himself, has
over 100 writing credtis with his wife, Elaine, including shows such as Star
Trek: The Next Generation, Sliders and Deep Space Nine.
| In his address, Zicree encouraged writers to work with passion and draw inspriation
from the heart. He spoke about why he feel writers write, noting it's "because
it's the only way I know how to stop time. The old adage of 'writing what you
know' is not about intellect, but "what you know - here," taking a
moment to point at his heart. He then continued, "Write what you care passionately
about."
| | Next, the finalists and winners in each of the various categories were announced.
Charles Horn took the top prize in the Half-Hour Television category for his
Everybody Loves Raymond script "Happy Anniversary." There was
an unusual tie in the One-Hour Television Category, with Doug Molitor's Smallville
script "Slither" and Patrick Sullivan's original pilot script Red
Right Hand taking the top prize. On the feature front, Sylvia Cary was awarded
top prize in the Feature Category for her The Ladies War screenplay.
| This year, hundreds of scripts were submitted from across the country. Qualified
readers were then given the first 30 pages of each script to review as part
of the first round of competition. Finalist scripts chosen for the second round
were then read in their entirety before the judges, consisting of industry producers,
development execs, agents, writers and showrunners, made their final decisions.
| More information about all of the Network's winners and finalists for this
year's Sautter Competition can be gathered by contacting Bill Lundy at info@scriptwritersnetwork.com.
