The 63rd annual George Foster Peabody Awards Call for Entries is in the mail,
asking for submissions for the country's most prestigious electronic media awards.
More than 100,000 electronic media professionals -- worldwide -- will receive
the mailing. Original broadcast, cablecast and webcast programs produced in
2003 are eligible. The entry deadline is January 15, 2004. Entrants may apply
online at www.peabody.uga.edu.
The Peabody Award, considered the most selective and prestigious honor for electronic media programming, is unique in that there are no categories for entry or nominations. Entries are judged by a 15-member Board, which includes television critics, industry practitioners, scholars and experts in culture and fine arts.
"This is the time when excitement begins to build. We know we're going to see the very best in electronic media. Our job is to set the highest standards and to find the material to meet those standards. In the end, the works we select as Peabody winners will truly define excellence in radio, television, cable and the web," said Dr. Horace Newcomb, director of the awards program.
Winners of the 62nd Annual Peabody Award include HBO's Six Feet Under, ABC's Nightline, CNN's Terror on Tape, ESPN's The Complete Angler, Chicago Public Radio's Stories of Home, WISN-TV for Sounding the Alarm, Fuji Television Network, BBC Radio 4, William H. Macy for the TNT drama Door to Door and Ally Sheedy, star of the Court TV movie The Interrogation of Michael Crowe.
Peabody recipients, whose subject matter explores health and medical issues, are eligible for the Peabody/Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Programming. This award carries a $10,000 cash prize to be used for development of programming consistent with the funding goals of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The Peabody Awards are administered by the University of Georgia's Grady College
of Journalism and Mass Communication. For further information regarding the
