Marissa Jaret Winokur, who won a Tony Award this year for her turn in Hairspray,
has been cast in the ABC comedy pilot The Furst Family. Touchstone TV
and Granada are producing the project. Winokur had signed a talent holding deal
with the Alphabet last year.
On the show, Winokur will play the 23-year-old daughter of the blue-collar
Furst family. As she prepares for her wedding day, the charmingly winsome daughter
causes a stir among the family. Furst Family is loosely based on the
U.K. comedy series The Royle Family, which starred Ricky Tomlinson and
Caroline Aherne and won the 2000 BAFTA TV award for a comedy series.
Winokur, repped by S.D.B. Partners, was most recently seen in the ABC Family
original movie Beautiful Girl, which she also produced. Beautiful
was the highest-rated TV movie on the channel last year. On the big screen,
Winokur has been seen in such features Never Been Kissed, American
Beauty and Scary Movie.
