After working with James Bond and the X-Men, Halle Berry is immersed in contemporary drama. She’s currently at work on the DreamWorks drama film Things We Lost in the Fire, after having wrapped the thriller Perfect Stranger at Sony. Now Daily Variety reports the actress will follow up with Class Act.

The film will be based on a true story of Reno Nevada schoolteacher Tierney Cahill who ran for Congress in 2000. Cahill’s attempt at a seat in the House of Representatives came as a challenge from her students, which she accepted on condition that her students take on the campaign as well. Although the single mother lost the race, she and her sixth grade class made a respectable showing, winning 35% of the vote in the campaign.

The film was originally set up at Revolution Studios, but that entity put the project in turnaround. Now DreamWorks wants to get the film in front of the cameras by next spring. The casting is a little unusual for Hollywood. The woman on which the story is based, Tierney Cahill is in reality a white woman, but DreamWorks sources say they were more interested in getting the right actress to play the role, rather than a white actress.

Meanwhile, in New York, Sissy Spacek is apparently the right actress to co-star in Lake City. The actress will play a mother estranged from her son following a family tragedy, but the two must bond together to save the family home. The movie is noteworthy in that musician Dave Matthews is also a member of the cast. He’ll be billed as David Matthews and he’ll play the bad guy in the family drama.

Co-directors Perry Moore and Hunter Hill say Spacek was the number one choice - they wrote the part for her. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Spacek is not only the right actress for the part, but she’s in the right region of the country. Shooting on the film begins next week in Virginia, where Spacek is a resident.
