School is back in session, and we don’t mean Hogwarts. Daily Variety reports Ealing Studios is reviving the classic St. Trinian’s comedy franchise with a new, star-studded version. Emily Watson, Rupert Everett, Colin Firth and Russell Brand will star in the reboot to be co-directed by Barnaby Thompson, the head of Ealing Studios, and his collaborator Oliver Parker.
The franchise, based on the books and cartoons of Ronald Searle, is centered on a zany group of schoolgirls at St. Trinians. Emily Watson will play the central teacher in the new version, while Everett takes the role of the cross-dressing headmistress and her unprincipled brother, both played by Alistair Sim in the original series. Caterina Murino, recently seen in Casino Royale, and Jodie Whittaker, who co-starred with Peter O’Toole in Venus, will also work in the film. Richard E Grant is likely to do a cameo.
The franchise got started in 1954 with the comedy The Bells of St. Trinian’s, and was followd by three sequels as well as a 1980 attempted reboot, The Wildcats of St. Trinians.
