Constantine Film has filed a $3 million lawsuit against actor John Goodman. Daily Variety reports the actor allegedly made a verbal agreement with the German film company to play a supporting role in Volker Schlondorff’s upcoming film Pope Joan, but they claim he backed out at the last minute, leaving the production without a Pope Sergius for the movie.

Constantine Film claims there was an agreement to pay Goodman a half million dollars for the movie, but Goodman’s camp says a formal agreement was never reached, and in March, his representatives notified the movie company that he would not be available. The movie is based on the Donna Woolfolk Cross novel about a woman who, disguised as a man, became the only female Pope during the dark ages. The novel was based on a centuries-old legend.

A spokesman for Goodman confirms there were talks about Goodman playing the Medieval Pope, but no agreement was reached. And, he adds, “This is a frivolous lawsuit.” Meanwhile Constantine Film is in conclave trying to elect another Pope Sergius.
