Who wished for this? Eddie Murphy is going to head up a big screen renewal of the old Fantasy Island television series for Columbia Pictures, according to Daily Variety.

Murphy will, as usual, play a number of roles in the film, and even less promising, the script will be written by Jay Scherick and David Ronn, the writers behind Norbit. The original series ran from 1978 to 1984, and starred Ricardo Montalban.

Another, much darker and more intriguing version of the series ran on NBC in 2002, with Malcolm McDowell taking over as Mr. Roarke, but that show never found an audience. Don’t look for an edge in the film version, however. The studio promises a “family oriented comedy” and lots and lots of Eddie Murphy.
