Australia has produced a string of great Hollywood actresses, led most recently by the best friend pairing of Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts. Now, well-known Down Under star Claudia Karvan continues to appear as if she will soon be following in their footsteps.

According to the Brisbane Courier-Mail, the 34-year-old actress and mother of two has joined Ethan Hawke as a co-lead in the 2008 vampire film Daybreakers, which is getting ready to film on Australia's Gold Coast. Sam Neill is also on board, with negotiations continuing for Willem Dafoe to officially join the cast.

Written and directed by brothers Michael and Peter Spierig, Daybreakers puts a bloodsucker twist on the old Mad Max scenario, positing that humans, vampires and a dwindling supply of the former group's blood are all swirling around in 2017. Hawke plays the role of a scientist who, with the help of a group of rogue vampires, is trying to find a cure for the plague transforming humans into bloodsuckers.

The Spierig's' previous movie, 2003's Undead, was all about small townsfolk turned into zombies by a meteorite crash, while Karvan - a co-star of the dramatic Australian TV series Love My Way - is also getting ready to provide one of the voices for the Claymation animated feature $9.99. Peter Jackson's WETA will be handling the special effects for Daybreakers.
