With his feature film directorial debut I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With arriving shortly in theaters, comedian Jeff Garlin is busy working with Pixar on the 2008 robot animated film Wall-E. He’s already had his brushes with the boundless enthusiasm of Hawaiian shirted maestro John Lasseter, to whom he gladly tips his hat.
“Almost all of Pixar’s movies are works of art,” Garlin suggests during a one-on-one interview with FilmStew. “Their only concern is the story; they are obsessed with story. With all that money at stake, and going for a mass audience, I think Pixar for the most part makes the only brilliant movies that we have now.”
“When I say brilliant, to me what brilliant is… Like I don’t think Curb Your Enthusiasm is brilliant,” he continues. “It borders on greatness, but it’s not brilliant, and here’s why. Dumb people cannot enjoy Curb Your Enthusiasm for the most part. Pixar movies, the smartest person in the room and the dumbest person in the room will both get something from it. You cannot say that about a lot of modern things. So to me, that’s what’s brilliant.”
Following the September 5th release of Cheese, the Garlin-directed and produced John Waters concert film This Filthy World will arrive on DVD October 30th. The latter was made with the help of Netflix’s theatrical production arm, Red Envelope Entertainment.
