Those toiling in the independent filmmaking world tend to do a lot better if they have a sense of humor. Among that group is Denver-based aspirant Thomas J. Chavez, who has started Strikeset Brand, a cheeky clothing line aimed at fellow artistes that he hopes will help fund his endeavors.
On the clothing line’s website – Filmmakergear.com - some of the $12.99 T-shirt slogans include: MASTER-BETA; writer. director. barista; Pull my focus; and I’d hit DAT. So far, the best-selling items are the ones that say ‘writer. director. barista.' and 'Fix it in post.'
“I just saw this as a way to help my cast and crew get their start, and bring a great film to the public,” Chavez explains. “With the profits being used to put over eighty young filmmakers, artists and actors to work, I’m hoping this is something the film community as well as the public can embrace.”
Off the bat, the project Chavez is looking to help finance through his T-shirts is the futuristic short Look Forward to a Bright New Past. Set in 2018, against a global Apartheid scenario outlawing ethnicities of all kinds, it tells the story of a 17-year-old African-American track star willing to resort to desperate measures to fit in.
