Queen Latifah and her Flavor Unit Entertainment producing partner Shakim Compere have pacted with Lions Gate Entertainment to develop their original idea, The Cookout, as a feature for the big screen. Latifah and Compere will produce the film through their banner and also have control over the film's soundtrack.Latifah launched Flavor Unit back in 1989 as a collaboration between Flavor Unit Records and a separate film and television production arm. On the small screen, the company has worked on such Latifah starrers as Living Single and The Queen Latifah Show. The shingle also produced the upcoming Disney release Bringing Down the Houze, which stars Latifah and Steve Martin. This will be the first teaming of Latifah and Lions Gate. The studio hopes Latifah's presence will help spark their urban market niche. Latifah, repped by the William Morris Agency, will next be seen in Fox Searchlight's Brown Sugar and Miramax's feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Chicago.
