Larry Brannock was a reporter for WKYT-TV in Lexington, Kentucky in 2006 the day Comair Flight 5191 bound for Atlanta crashed out of Blue Grass Airport.
On August 6th, Brannock will premiere a new feature documentary he has produced and directed about the disaster titled 49 Doves: The Flight 5191 Disaster. The film will unfurl at the Kentucky Theatre during the 20th anniversary month of the tragedy, which on August 27th, 2006 claimed 49 lives.
Brannock, who now works in energy communications, put the film together fairly quickly, starting on it in earnest last fall. He told his former journalism employer WKYT that among the stories he uncovered is that of Julie Shephard and Cecile Moscoe.
The two friends, before the flight, flipped a coin to decide which one of them would board the plane to assist with the recovery effort for Hurricane Katrina. Moscoe won the coin toss.
"As Cecile is sitting in Blue Grass Airport, they talked for a few minutes telephone," Brannock shared. "The last thing Cecile says is, 'I love you and I'll call you when I get there.'"
The tragedy was the result of human error, as the pilot took the wrong runway during takeoff. For the 95-minute documentary, Brannock interviewed several dozen people connected to the events of that horrible day.
Comair Airlines, a subsidiary of Delta, operated from 1977 to 2012. The sole survivor of the crash, First Officer and co-pilot James Polehinke, was the subject of a 2013 documentary subsequently acquired by CNN.
