British Mockumentary Takes Aim at Worm Charming

Formed in 2022 by a quartet of London Film Academy students, Jacco Macacco Films is unfurling their latest grassroots production.

The Worm Charmers is a 30-minute mockumentary spun off a very real activity, which holds its annual World championship each June in the small Cheshire town of Willaston and has a Guinness World Record to go along with it. The idea is to coax worms out of the ground without digging, usually by means of a planted fork and tapped vibrations.

Following a cast, crew, friends and family screening earlier this month in London, The Worm Charmers is set to screen this weekend, Sunday July 26th, in Grantham, the hometown of co-director Oscar Hewitt. At the center of the film's four-hour competition are dairy farmer Abigail and her estranged brother William, a lawyer.

Ironically, when the film was shot over four days last September mainly at a park in London, not a single worm was charmed. Somewhat cheekily, the end credits include the sentence, 'No worms were charmed in the making of this movie.'

Following the London screening, attendee Tommo Thomas raved, "Best one yet, guys! Just keep getting better and better." Submissions to various film festivals are in progress.

Jacco Macacco's first effort, the 47-minute comedy A Van Called Muriel (2023), was about a deluded folk music band journeying across the British countryside to their first-ever gig. This was followed by Saving Penelope (2024), a 36-minute comedy heist film, and Friday Is Mushroom Soup (2025), about a burnt-out caretaker.
